2003 YUKATA COMPETITION

Today there are not as many opportunities for Japanese girls to show off their traditional Japanese fashion and clothing. The Yukata Competition (a bit like a traditional Japanese fashion competition) gives the Japanese girls in Melbourne Australia a chance to dress up in their summer traditional Japanese kimono, the Yukata. The Yukata is a summer casual kimono and is often very colorful.

AND THE WINNER IS...
2003 saw a significant increase in number of Japanese girls entering the Yukata Competition. This made the task more difficult than last year for the judges. This time it looks like you needed to have an accompanying male to win.

HOW TO WIN A YUKATA COMPETITION

To win a Yukata Competition you need to fulfil the basic criteria of the judges. The Japan Club of Victoria's Yukata Competition is not a beauty competition, but more a traditional Japanese fashion competition. The emphases here is on tradition.

A Japanese girl's presentation in the Yukata Competition must therefore be in a traditional Japanese fashion style.

  • Yukata must be of traditional cut and pattern design, but still colorful.
  • Geta or traditional Japanese sandals must be worn. Modern designs or materials are definitely out.
  • Hair style should be traditional or at least have the hair worn up.
