Kimonos and guys

Postby alexia_uk » Wed Nov 26, 2008 8:55 am

Hi

My bf and I love japanese fashions. I have bought him a beautiful golden coloured kimono and obi for Christmas, which set me back £120. The thing is, when I think about it, I am not sure if this is actually a female kimono and if it is will anyone know? I see pics of Japanese men in kimonos which look a bit different, but some others look similar to his. How different are they and will it be a problem? We live in London and he would like to wear it to parties and functions sometimes, but what should I do?

If you are just wearing it to parties are don't think many people would know the difference unless they are Japanese or know a great deal about kimonos.

Post a picture here or put a link to one and I will have a look.

Hi Craig and thankyou.

I can't photo the actual kimono becuase it is all wrapped up in special Japanese gift wrap. I've found this pic which looks close to it except the colour is gold not orange and there isn't any pattern on it (this also not where I bought it from - I got a friend to buy it while she was in Osaka). It is really lovely and I can't wait to see him in it, but just dont want him embarrassed! The website says this is a ladies kimono and that's why I am worried - all the male kimonos I can find seem shorter, darker and maybe a different material?

By the way, what would be ok for guys to wear under it? I can't find jubans anywhere apart from antique sites. Someone suggested a slip, but I think that would make the issue I'm concerned about much worse!

Thanks for your help; I really appreciate it.
