HIROSHIMA MAIN CITIES and TOWNS

Fukuyama is a city located to the east of Hiroshima city on the Ashida River in Hiroshima Prefecture. Fukuyama attractions include Fukuyama Castle, Myooin Temple, Taichoro Temple Hall, Kusado Sengen (historic city which has been excavated) and the nearby town of Tomonoura which is a fishing port featuring many interesting temples and shrines.

Hiroshima

Miyajima

Miyajima is the name of a town on the island of Itsukushima, which commonly referred to as Miyajima, which is famous for the World Heritage Site of Itsukushima Shrine. Itsukushima Shrine and its famous Miyajima Torii form one the Three Views of Japan. Miyajima also features many other temples, shrines, rare forest, wild deer and monkeys. Miyajima is located in Hiroshima Prefecture.

HIROSHIMA CASTLES

Fukuyama Castle, also known as Hisamatsu Castle and Iyo Castle, is a hilltop style Japanese Castle located in Fukuyama Hiroshima Prefecture. Fukuyama Castle was constructed by the Bingo - Fukuyama Han in 1619 and featured five story donjon (tower) and a double moat complete with access to the Seto Inland Sea. Most of buildings of Fukuyama Castle were destroyed during World War II and most of the stone walls were then subsequently removed. In 1966 a modern reconstruction of the donjon (tower) with a museum inside was completed.

Hiroshima Castle

Hiroshima Castle is flatland style Japanese castle located in Hiroshima city. Mori Terumoto ordered the construction Hiroshima Castle in 1589 and it was completed in 1591. Hiroshima Castle featured three concentric moats plus additional protection was provided by Hongawa River (called Otagawa River at the time). The original Hiroshima Castle was destroyed by the Hiroshima Atomic Bombing. In 1958 a modern reconstruction of the five story donjon (tower) was completed and more recently a gate and turret (yagura) in the ninomaru have been reconstructed using traditonal materials and techniques.

HIROSHIMA SHRINES and TEMPLES

Daiganji Temple

Daiganji Temple is located next to Itsukushima Shrine on the island of Miyajima. Daiganji Temple is an ancient Shingon Buddhist temple with strong ties to Shinto Shrines. Daiganji Temple used to be in full charge of the repair and construction of temples and shrines including Itsukushima Shrine. Daiganji Temple is dedicated to Benzaiten, the goddess of eloquence, music, and wealth, and enshrines one of the three most famous Benzaiten statues in Japan in addition to many other valuable Buddhist statues.

Daishoin Temple

Daishoin Temple is an ancient Shingon Buddhist temple built at the foot of the sacred Mt Misen on the island of Miyajima. During the time of fusion period of Shintoism and Buddhism, this distinguished temple governed all priests in Miyajima and was in charge of religious ceremonies of Itsukushima Shrine.

Goju-no-to

Goju-no-to, located in Miyajima, is a vermilion red Five-Storied Pagoda, built in 1407AD. Goju-no-to is a splendid structure and beauty which skilfully combines the beauty of Japanese and Chinese architectural styles. Goju-no-to is 27.6 metres high. Goju-no-to is located next to Senjokaku Shrine.

Itsukushima Jinja Homottsukan (Itsukushima Shrine Treasure Hall) in Miyajima is a great viewing and photographing point.

Itsukushima Shrine

Itsukushima Shrine is a Shinto Shrine located on the island of Miyajima in Hiroshima Prefecture. Itsukushima Shrine was first constructed in the 6th century, but the current buildings date to the 12th century. Itsukushima Shrine is famous for its floating torii, Otorii, commonly referred to as Miyajima Torii, which appears to float on the water in bay in front of the shrine. Itsukushima Shrine is a UNESCO World Heritage Site within the "Itsukushima Shinto Shrine" listing.

Senjokaku Shrine

Senjokaku Shrine, also know as the The Hall of a Thousand Tatami Mats, is located on the island of Miyajima. In 1587AD Hideyoshi Toyotomi, the warlord who unified Japan during this era, ordered the establishment of Senjokaku Shrine as a place where sutra-chanting would be held in honor of war casualties. While it is the biggest building in Miyajima, Senjokaku Shrine has never been finished with its construction halting on Hideyoshi Toyotomi's death, so it only has the floor space of 857 tatami mats.

Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum focuses on the effects the Hiroshima Atomic Bombing had on the people of Hiroshima. The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum is located within the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park.

Miyajima Museum of History and Folklore is located in Miyajima.

Miyajima Torii is the gate (torii) to the World Heritage list Itsukushima Shrine. The Miyajima Torii is one the most famous views in Japan.

Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park

Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park contains several memorials to the people affected by the atomic bombing of Hiroshima including the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, Memorial Cenotaph, Peace Pond and Peace Flame.

Senkoji Park, located on Mt Senkoji in Onomichi Hiroshima Prefecture, provides views of Onomichi City and the island of the Seto Inland Sea. Senkoji Park features many flowering plants: azaleas (Spring), pink and purple wisteria (early Summer), chrysanthemums (Autumn) and thousands of cherry blossom trees. Senkoji Park is considered one of Japan's Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots. Senkoji Park is also the site of Path of Literature and Onomichi City Museum of Art.

Shukkeien Garden

Shukkeien Garden Hiroshima sometimes known as Bridges in Shukkeien is one of the great Japanese gardens. Skukkeien Garden is also significant for its roll in the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.

Ueno Park Shobara, is located in Hiroshima, is most famous for its cherry blossom being considered one of Japan's Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots.

HIROSHIMA MONUMENTS

Cenotaph for A-bomb Victims

Cenotaph for A-bomb Victims is located near the center of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and saddle-shaped monument formed out of concrete that covers a cenotaph holding the names of all of the people killed by the bomb. The Cenotaph for A-bomb Victims follows a tradtional Shinto style, with the arch providing protection for the souls of the victims. The cenotaph carries the epitaph, "Rest in Peace, for the error shall not be repeated." When you stand at the correct position, you can look through the arch of the monument to see the Peace Flame and the A-Bomb Dome. The Cenotaph for A-bomb Victims was one of the first memorial monuments built on open field on August 6, 1952.

Hiroshima Peace Memorial

Hiroshima Peace Memorial (Genbaku Domu) is commonly referred to as the Hiroshima Atomic Bomb Dome. Hiroshima Peace Memorial is a memorial to those who died as a result of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima at the end of World War II. Hiroshima Peace Memorial is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the only site for the "Hiroshima Peace Memorial (Genbaku Dome)" listing.

Mt Misen

Mt Misen, the highest mountain on Miyajima Island rises 535 meters above sea level. Mt Misen is covered with a primeval forest which is part of the World Heritage listing for Miyajima.

HIROSHIMA AIRPORTS

Hiroshima Airport, (IATA: HIJ, ICAO: RJOA), formerly known as Hiroshima-Nishi Airport (changed 1994) is located in Mihara Hiroshima Prefecture 50km east of Hiroshima city. Hiroshima Airport is an international and domestic airport which is the largest airport in Chugoku region. There is no rail link to Hiroshima Airport.

Hiroshima Station is the centre of Hiroshima's public transport. Hiroshima Station includes platforms for the Shinkansen.

Miyajimaguchi Station is the station to change for the ferry to Miyajima Island and Itsukushima Shrine.
