ZAO ONSEN - Go Japan Go

ZAO ONSEN

Zao Onsen is one of the most famous and popular onsen (hot spring) resort towns in Japan, where the natural hot springs were discovered in 110AD. Zao Onsen is also a very popular ski and snowboarding destination featuring excellent powder snow, 15 different slopes and 12 courses, with the longest course over 10km. Zao Onsen is also famous for its 'Ice Monsters' (Juhyo), which form around the trees near the top of the mountain in the coldest months of winter (December to February). Zao Onsen is around 40 minutes by car from Yamagata city.

Directions:
Take the Tsubasa Shinkansen from Tokyo to Yamagata city. Takes almost 3 hours. Then catch the Yamako Bus outside station from bus bay 1. Zao Onsen is the final stop. Bus travel time approximately 45 mintues.
