SHUGAKUIN IMPERIAL VILLA

Shugakuin Imperial Villa is famous for its three Japanese gardens which are some of the best in Japan. Shugakuin Imperial Villa, which is related to Kyoto Imperial Palace, is located in Kyoto.

Shugakuin Imperial Villa also known as the Shugakuin Detached Palace is a separate, but related site to the Kyoto Imperial Palace (hence detached). Shugakuin Imerial Villa is set in 53 hectare (133 acre) grounds, with the primary features being three main gardens and some tea houses. These Japanese gardens are considered to be some of the best in Japan. There are no large scale buildings as are found at Katsura Imperial Villa. Shugakuin Imperial Villa is located in the eastern hills Kyoto.

The Imperial Household Agency administers the Shugakuin Imperial Villa, and accepts visitors only by appointment. In theory you can apply on the day, but you may be disappointed. While it is easy to apply online with English language forms, the difficult part can be getting an appointment. In Spring and Autumn (Fall) you are likely to need to book at least a two months in advance. Unfortunately you cannot book more than three months in advance.

(Apply in person at 8:45am Closed Sat & Sun)
The closest station to Shugakuin is Shugakuin Station on the Eizan Railway Line, from where the villa's entrance gates can be reached in a 10 to 15 minute walk.
