TOCHIGI PREFECTURE

Tochigi Prefecture is located in the Kanto region. The capital city of Tochigi Prefecture is Utsunomiya. Tochigi Prefectureis famous for the World Heritage temples and shrines in the historic town of Nikko.

TOCHIGI MAIN CITIES and TOWNS

Nikko

Nikko is famous for its temples and shrines including three which are World Heritage Sites. The township of Nikko is surrounded by beautiful forrest. Located nearby is Nikko National Park with its famous waterfalls.

Utsunomiya is the capital city of Tochigi Prefecture and while not officially considered to be part of the greater urban area of Tokyo, it effectively is. Utsunomiya is located 100km north of Tokyo and 25km south east of the historic town of Nikko. Utsunomiya attractions include Utsunomiya Castle, Ohya Keikan-koen (Park), Magaibutsu (the oldest carving of Buddha in Japan), Ohya-ishi Quarry Ruins and many Buddhist temples. Utsunomiya is also famous for its roughly 200 gyoza (Chinese dumplings) specialty shops.

Futarasan Shrine

Futarasan Shrine is one of the most significant Shinto Shrines in Japan and dates back to 766AD. Futarasan Shrine located in Nikko, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and forms part of the "Shrines and Temples of Nikko" listing.

Nikko Toshogu Shrine

Toshogu Shrine is famous for the sculptures of the Three Wise Monkeys who 'hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil' and its rare highly decorative gate. Toshogu Shrine, located in Nikko, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and forms part of the "Shrines and Temples of Nikko" listing.

Rinnoji Taiyuin

Rinnoji Taiyuin, built in 1653, is the mausoleum of Tokugawa Iemitsu, the 3rd Tokugawa shogun. Rinnoji Taiyuin is a representative architecture of early Edo period and with its vivid colors you can see the Chinese influence. Rinnoji Taiyuin is part of the Rinnoji Temple complex which is located in Nikko and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Rinnoji Temple is a complex of 15 Buddhist temple buildings, which are is famous for their gold-leafed statues of Amida and Kannon. Rinnoji Temple, located in Nikko, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and forms part of the "Shrines and Temples of Nikko" listing.

Rinnoji Shoyoen

Rinnoji Shoyoen is a Japanese garden located next to the World Heritage Site of Rinnoji Temple in Nikko. Rinnoji Shoyoen was created in the Edo Period in the Chisen Kaiyu style. The Rinnoji Shoyoen garden is designed to look like Lake Biwa and the surrounding scenery in Shiga Prefecture. Visitors can enjoy the beautiful flowers and trees throughout the year but it is best in autumn.

Shinkyo Bridge

Shinkyo Bridge (Shinko literially means sacred bridge) is a distinctive red bridge is actually part of Futarasan Shrine, but is some distance from the main shrine buildings. Shinkyo Bridge is located just at the edge of the township of Nikko and next to the main road. The World Heritage Bus stops in front of the bridge. In feudal times, only the shogun was permitted to cross Shinkyo Bridge.

Kegon Waterfall is an impressively high 97m waterfall, which is particularly popular in Autumn when the leaves of the trees in area turn a stunning red. Kegon Waterfall flows into Lake Chuzenji, a picturesque lake in the Nikko National Park near the historic city of Nikko. While Kegon Waterfall is close to Nikko, there is only a steep and narrow winding road between the two, that becomes very congested in the peak season of Autumn when the leaves of the trees in area turn a stunning red.

Lake Chuzenji is a picturesque lake in the Nikko National Park near the city of Nikko. Lake Chuzenji is famous its 97m high Kegon Falls. Lake Chuzenji is quite deep in sections at up to 163m, and has a circumference of 25km. Edo Wonderland is theme park based on traditional Japan in the Edo Period, which features people dressed and in character from the period including ronin (masterless samurai), women in kimono with traditional white makeup and ninja. Edo Wonderland is located in historic town of Nikko in the Tochigi Prefecture.
