Introduction

Kurume is a city known for being the birth place of the Bridgestone Tire Corporation, who originally developed rubber covered tabi footware for the farmer to protect their feet from parasitic worms. Kurume is also famous for its traditional Japanese products including trays and bowls made from rantai shikki (lacquered bamboo) and kasuri, a rough cloth which as been dyed indigo. Kurume is in Fukuoka Prefecture on the island of Kyushu.
