Introduction

Esashi is one of the oldest towns in Hokkaido, and derives its name from the word konbu, which is Ainu for a type of edible kelp. Esashi is famous as the birthplace of Esashi Oiwake, a form of traditional folk music. Esashi is located in the Hiyama District of Hokkaido, which is on the western coastline in the south of the island.
