Introduction

Iwate Prefecture is located in Tohoku Region on the island of Honshu. The capital of Iwate Prefecture is Morioka. Iwate is famous for the Hiraizumi Temples, Gardens and Archaeological Sites Representing the Buddhist Pure Land which are World Heritage Sites. Iwate Prefecture is located in northern Honshu on the eastern coastline. Iwate Prefecture is the second largest Japanese Prefecture by area and the second lowest population density on any Japanese Prefecture. The coastal areas of Iwate Prefecture were badly damaged by the March 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and subsequent tsunami.
