Introduction

Toba is a coastal city famous for being the place where pearls were cultured for the first time in the world. This achievement by Kokichi Mikimoto in 1893 lead to the development of a world famous brand. One of the Toba's attractions is the Pearl Museum and model factory. Other attractions include the Toba Aquarium and the various islands where the pearl diving demonstrations by women divers, known as ama, occur. Toba is also very close to the most important shrine in Japan, Ise Jingu Shrine.
