Map of Japan Islands
This map of Japan islands depicts the four main islands of Japan, with Hokkaido in the north and the main island of Honshu where the main population centers of Tokyo, Yokohama, Osaka and Kyoto are located. Directly south of the island of Honshu is Shikoku and to the south east is Kyushu which has the major city of Nagasaki. The four largest islands of Japan are sometimes referred to as the “big four”.
Japan has more than 6,600 islands (where an island is defined as a land mass more than 100m in average circumference). Of these 6,600 Japan islands, 420 are inhabited (that is people live there). Japan has several significant artificial (man made) islands including some that were built specifically for the construction of airports on these islands. The following Japanese airports are built on artificial islands: Haneda Airport (Tokyo International Airport), Kansai International Airport, Kobe Airport, Chubu Centrair International Airport and New Kitakyushu Airport.
