• Profile

Tomioka Silk Mill is a historic silk mill that was the first in Japan to use mass production techniques based on imported French technology. This UNESCO World Heritage site exhibits the fully integrate industry approach that early Meiji Period Government had wished to develop, with the nearby Tajima Yahei Sericulture Farm and the Takayama-sha Sericulture School. The Tomioka Silk Mill, established in 1872 by the Japanese Government, is an excellent example of late 19th century Japanese industrial architecture and construction, which combines both western and traditional Japanese elements of design.
