Shibuto Cine Tower is a cinema complex in fashionable Shibuya.
Shibuya 109 is a famous fashion shopping centre in the very fashionable Shibuya district of Tokyo. Shibuya 109 (ichimarukyū) shopping centre filled with over 120 very trendy clothing boutiques over 10 floors. It is very popular among young women, especially teens through to their early twenties. Shibuya 109 is in a prime location, where it is clearly seen from the Shibuya Crossing outside Shibuya Station.
The Shibuya 109 centre management is always working hard to keep the shopping experience fresh and on trend. There are always new campaigns running to encourage shoppers to return. Many promotions are run at the front of the building in the forecourt area. Companies that want to market to the young women of Tokyo rent this space to run a promotion. Marketing and promotion of the shopping centre has become even more important in recent years with the opening of the Shibuya Hikarie shopping centre nearby. Both of these shopping centres are targeting very similar customers.
It is famous as the origin of the kogal subculture that started in the 2000s. Kogals are known for wearing platform boots, a miniskirt, copious amounts of makeup, hair coloring (usually blond), artificial suntans, and designer accessories. Today while the current fashion has changed, many of the less extreme trends still remain.
The shopping centre is operated by Tokyu Malls Development (TMD), a subsidiary of the Tokyu Group. The owners name is where the building derives its name from as “109” in Japanese is pronounced “to kyu”, hence “Shibuya to kyu”.
The Shibuya 109 building features very distinctive architecture with the large cylindrical section at the front and the triangular section of the building behind. It is hard to believe that such a modern looking building opened as far back as 1979. Clearly the original design by the architect Minoru Takeyama, combined with shiny silver looking exterior has created a building that continues to look modern all these years later.
There are actually two Shibuya 109 in Shibuya. The second being the number 2 building.
